The Cisco 640-461 exam, known as the Introducing Cisco Voice and Unified Communications Administration (ICOMM) exam, assesses the knowledge of a candidate in Cisco Unified Communications solutions including its design, elements, operation, and attributes. The exam also examines the skills and abilities of the candidate to make variations on Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express (CUCME), Cisco Unified Presence (CUP), Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM), and Cisco Unity Connection and also to execute various tasks like moves, system monitoring and additions.

The associated certifications for the 640-461 ICOMM exam are Cisco Certified Network Associate Voice (CCNA Voice) and Cisco Certified Network Associate Video (CCNA Video). While CCNA Voice has the 640-461 ICOMM exam as the only qualifying exam for attaining the certification, the CCNA Video certification requires the candidates to pass two exams including 200-001 VIVND and 640-461 ICOMM.
The prerequisites for a candidate to take up this exam which is qualifying exam for the CCNA Voice certification is to be certified as a Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Routing and Switching or Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE). The candidates must also possess the knowledge on the basics of CUCM, CUC and Cisco IOS gateways and working of the data networks and converged voice.

This domain requires the candidates to have knowledge and skills relating to end user accounts and associated devices. The candidates must have the know-how of the options in user creation for CUCME and CUCM, creation and modification of directory numbers, user accounts for CUCM, user account and endpoints for CUCME with the use of graphical user interface (GUI). The candidates should also have the knowledge and skills of the functioning of the calling privileges, its impact on the features of the system, enablement of end users for CUP and user features as well as related calling privileges for call coverage, native presence, extension mobility, configuration of unified mobility remote destination and intercom.
- Configure Voice Messaging and Presence (26%)
This is the most important domain for the 640-461 ICOMM exam as the topics of this domain have the maximum coverage in the exam compared to the other domains. The candidate must have clear understanding of CUP and its configuration, options for voice messaging user creation, and creation or modification of user accounts for Cisco Unity Connection.
- Maintain Cisco Unified Communications System (10%)
This domain requires the candidates to have insights about report generation on capacity, call management record, usage, call detail record, and Real-Time Monitoring Tool (RTMT), performing backup manually, monitoring usage of voicemail, and eliminating the directory numbers which are not assigned.
- Provide End User Support (24%)
The exam lays emphasis on candidates to have detailed information on provision of support to the end users. This domain also forms a significant part of the exam content requiring the candidates to have in-depth knowledge of Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) connectivity, troubleshooting issues on endpoints, identifying fault domains, and issues and solutions relating to voicemail and call quality.
